Designed by Davis Love III · Est. 2025

Aerie at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska was designed by Davis Love III and opened in 2025 as a 10-hole par-30 layout. Love created the short course as a companion to Hazeltine's championship layout, designed for member enjoyment and junior development on the grounds of one of Minnesota's most storied golf facilities and a frequent U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, and Ryder Cup venue.

History

Aerie is a ten-hole short course at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, designed by Davis Love III in partnership with architect Scot Sherman and Mark Love. Hazeltine broke ground on the course in June 2024, and it opened in 2025 as part of the club's Vision 2040 long-range plan — a strategic initiative aimed at making golf more accessible and enjoyable for players of varying skill levels and time availability. The course was conceived alongside The Loop, a broader community experience program at Hazeltine designed to engage families, beginners, and experienced golfers with formats that differ from the standard 18-hole round. Aerie's ten-hole format was deliberately chosen to offer a quicker, more relaxed alternative to the club's championship course while maintaining the design quality and conditioning standards that Hazeltine's reputation demands.

Love's design philosophy for Aerie emphasized large, undulating greens that reward precise wedge shots, paired with ample short grass around the greens and minimal rough. The decision to maximize short-grass areas and reduce penalizing rough encourages creativity and shot variety rather than mechanical target golf — reflecting Love's belief that short courses should maximize the fun and strategic interest of the short game. Hazeltine National is a distinguished championship venue in American golf, having hosted the 1966 and 1991 U.S. Opens, the 1970 U.S. Women's Open, the 2002 and 2009 PGA Championships, the 2016 Ryder Cup, the 2019 U.S. Women's Amateur, and the 2024 U.S. Amateur. The addition of Aerie expands the club's programming beyond championship competition, complementing the main course with a facility designed for a different kind of golf experience.

Davis Love III, the 1997 PGA Championship winner and a long-time captain of United States Ryder Cup teams, brought both his competitive background and his course design experience to the project, creating a layout that reflects his understanding of what makes golf enjoyable at every level of the game.
