History
Congaree Golf Club opened in 2017 in Ridgeland, South Carolina, representing among the ambitious and purposefully philanthropic private golf club projects in the country's recent history. The club's founding figures — Houston Texans NFL owner Bob McNair and businessman Dan Friedkin of the Friedkin Group — envisioned Congaree not merely as a private golf venue but as the physical expression of a new model for how golf clubs could serve broader societal purposes, particularly in providing educational and vocational opportunities for young people through the game. The property itself carries deep historical significance. The land in Jasper County has been documented as an inhabited estate since at least 1770, when John Hobard received a grant of 100 acres in service to King George III. Subsequent centuries of agricultural use, including timber operations and row cropping, shaped the landscape that Tom Fazio would eventually transform into a golf course.
When the property was purchased in 2014 by a development entity under the name Davant Farming and Timber Company, approximately 2,000 acres of longleaf pine forests and natural lakes accompanied the historic estate buildings that would become Congaree's distinctive clubhouse complex. From 2015 through 2017, the historic main house was meticulously renovated while a lodge, several cottages, and a twelve-bedroom inn were added in architectural styles designed to complement the existing antebellum structures. The resulting complex creates an atmosphere of lived-in Southern elegance that situates the golf experience within a broader sense of place and history — guests who stay on property inhabit buildings whose character evolved across multiple eras rather than arriving in a purpose-built resort facility. Tom Fazio designed the championship course that became Congaree's golf centerpiece, working with the longleaf pine forests and native grasses that characterize the Jasper County interior. Unlike Fazio's coastal Lowcountry work at Belfair or Callawassie, where marshland and water hazards define the visual landscape, the Congaree design draws its character from the inland ecosystem — towering longleaf pines flanking fairways, native wire grass in rough areas, and a Sandhills-adjacent quality to the sandy soil and turf that gives the course a distinctive playing character unlike anything else in the South Carolina golf landscape.
The course's introduction to tournament golf was sudden and consequential. In 2021, the PGA Tour's Palmetto Championship at Congaree was announced with little lead time and played in June of that year, with South Africa's Garrick Higgo winning by a single stroke in what became his first PGA Tour title. The tournament introduced Congaree to a national audience that had limited awareness of the club's existence, and the television coverage highlighted both the course's visual quality and its demanding playing character. The CJ Cup came to Congaree in October 2022, providing the club's second PGA Tour event and another opportunity for national and international audiences to evaluate the Fazio design against the world's best players. The course stood up to that scrutiny, with the tournament field confirming that Congaree's championship setup was genuinely demanding without relying on artificial trickery or gimmickry.
The Congaree Foundation, established as a companion organization to the club, has funded after-school programs, summer golf academies, and vocational training initiatives in the surrounding Jasper County community. The McNair and Friedkin families' commitment to this philanthropic mission sets Congaree apart from any other private club in South Carolina and most in the United States — the course's competitive excellence and the foundation's community impact existing not in tension but as complementary expressions of the founders' vision for what a golf club could be and mean beyond its fairways.
