Burlington Country Club in Westampton, New Jersey was founded in 1929 on 150 acres of the historic Burrs Woods property, with a course designed by Alexander Findlay — a Scottish-born architect credited with introducing the game to much of the American midwest and east. The original 18-hole layout, completed in 1931, was significantly renovated in 2002 by Ault and Clark Associates, who built six new greens and rerouted the back nine.

History

Burlington Country Club in Westampton, New Jersey was organized in 1929 when a group of men with a shared interest in golf formed a club and purchased 150 acres of the property known as Burrs Woods, located approximately two miles from Mount Holly, from Walter and Alyce K. Hess. The club engaged Alexander Findlay to design the course. Findlay, known informally as "the Father of golf in America," had emigrated from Montrose, Scotland to the United States in the 1880s, initially to manage a ranch in Nebraska, where he had laid out a rudimentary course drawing on his Scottish upbringing. He went on to design several hundred courses across the United States, including Reading Country Club, Lake Placid Country Club, and the Lakeside course at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, as well as numerous courses throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Findlay's son John supervised construction at Burlington. The first nine holes opened for play in 1930. One year later, in 1931, the second nine holes were added, completing the 18-hole layout. The original course design emphasized accuracy over length, with straightaway holes balanced by strategic doglegs, and greens of varying complexity from subtle undulations to more severe slopes — characteristics consistent with Findlay's body of work. In 2002, Ault and Clark Associates oversaw a significant renovation of the entire golf course. The work included the construction of six new greens and a rerouted back nine, substantially altering the rear half of the layout while preserving the parkland character of Findlay's design. The club is located at 170 Burrs Road in Westampton Township, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Philadelphia.
