Bunn Golf Course is a tree-lined, 18-hole municipal layout set within Springfield's historic Bunn Park, featuring narrow fairways and bentgrass greens that reward accuracy over distance. Operating under the Springfield Park District, it provides affordable public access to one of central Illinois's oldest golf properties. The course's mature oaks and tight corridors give it a classic Midwest parkland character.
History
Bunn Golf Course traces its roots to the late nineteenth century, when the Springfield Golf Club operated a rudimentary course on the grounds that would eventually become Bunn Park. The Springfield Park District acquired the property in 1909 and renamed it Bunn Park in 1913 in honor of local financier and philanthropist John W. Bunn (1831–1920), who had deep ties to the city's commercial and civic life. The formal golf facility opened with nine holes in 1914, making it one of the earliest public golf courses established in downstate Illinois. The layout was expanded to a full 18 holes in 1917, cementing its status as the park district's flagship golf property. For much of the early and mid-twentieth century, Bunn served as the primary public golfing venue for the Springfield community, welcoming players from all walks of life during a period when private club golf dominated the sport. Roger Packard, a prominent Illinois-based golf course architect whose family name became synonymous with Midwest course design, is credited with shaping the modern routing of the course. Packard's design philosophy favored playability for everyday golfers while preserving natural terrain features, a sensibility that suited the park setting at Bunn. His work established the tree-lined, parkland character that defines the course today.Bentgrass greens provide smooth, consistent putting surfaces, while bluegrass fairways give the course a lush appearance through the playing season. The tree cover—consisting primarily of mature oak, maple, and elm—creates tight, shaded corridors that penalize wayward iron play and put a premium on accuracy off the tee. The course offers three tee options, allowing golfers of varying ability levels to find an appropriate challenge.0/120), the course presents a genuine test for mid-handicappers, while the white tees (5,917 yards, 68.2/116) and red tees (5,164 yards) make the layout accessible to a broad range of players, including the women's tees (rated 75.2/128 from the blue markers). Bunn Park itself provides a scenic setting with open green space beyond the golf property, and the course benefits from its urban park location with easy access from central Springfield. The facility operates as part of the Springfield Park District's golf portfolio, which also includes Pasfield Golf Course and Lincoln Greens Golf Course. Over more than a century of operation, Bunn Golf Course has served as an entry point to the game for generations of Springfield-area golfers. Its combination of historical depth, tree-lined challenge, and affordable municipal pricing ensures it remains a meaningful part of the central Illinois golf landscape.8 and slope of 121. The course's 1914 founding places it among Illinois's oldest continuously operating golf facilities, predating by decades the municipal golf investment that would reshape access to the game across the state. Roger Packard's redesign preserved the historical character of the Springfield layout while addressing the infrastructure and conditioning challenges that a century-old course inevitably accumulates. The municipal pricing and accessibility of Bunn Golf Course reflects Springfield's commitment to maintaining an affordable golf option at the center of the state's capital city.
