History
Buffalo Trace Golf Course has been part of Jasper's public recreation program since 1970, when the City of Jasper established the course one mile north of downtown to provide residents of Dubois County with a quality public golf facility. Located at 1728 Jackson Street, the course occupies land that recalls the historic buffalo traces — ancient migration paths worn by bison herds — that traversed southwestern Indiana before European settlement. The front nine of the course was laid out in 1970, designed by William Newcomb Associates, the Michigan-based golf architecture firm that produced dozens of course designs across the Midwest during this period. Newcomb's routing made use of the gently rolling terrain of Dubois County, creating a layout that was accessible to beginning golfers while offering enough strategic variety to engage experienced players. The back nine, designed by Gary Kern, ASGCA, was added in 1988 and extended the facility to its current 18-hole configuration.
The completed 18-hole course plays to 6,276 yards from the Blue tees with a rating of 71.4 and a slope of 136 — a notably demanding slope for a course of this length, reflecting Kern's thoughtful use of the terrain to create challenge without relying on extreme yardage. The White tees at 5,985 yards carry a rating of 70.1 and slope of 131. A Gold tee set at 5,055 yards offers a 65.3 rating with a slope of 120, while the Red tees at the same distance carry a women's rating of 70.1 and slope of 125. Zoysia grass covers the fairways, a characteristic of many Indiana courses that provides a firm, tight turf surface well-suited to the region's climate. The course is maintained by the City of Jasper Parks and Recreation Department and has earned consistent recognition for its conditioning and value.
