62000 Broken Top Dr, Bend, OR 97702

Designed by Tom Weiskopf · Jay Morrish · Est. 1993

Set against the backdrop of the Cascade Range in Bend, Oregon, Broken Top Club showcases the collaborative genius of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish across 7,161 yards of high-desert terrain. The layout blends traditional design principles with dramatic elevation changes, volcanic rock outcroppings, and sweeping views of Broken Top Mountain, Mount Bachelor, and the Three Sisters peaks.

History

Broken Top Club is one of the respected private golf experiences in Oregon, a Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish design that opened on July 4, 1993 in the high desert landscape of Bend, with the distinctive jagged peak of Broken Top Mountain providing the dramatic backdrop that gives the club its name. The course is consistently recognized among the finest private courses in the Pacific Northwest. The development of Broken Top Club required navigating the geological reality of central Oregon's volcanic landscape — the basalt and lava rock that underlies the Bend area requires careful course construction to create playable conditions while preserving the natural character of the high desert environment. The development team consulted both Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf before awarding the design commission to Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, who had established themselves as among the accomplished design partnerships in American golf.

Layout work began in 1991, with the primary construction phase concentrated in 1992. The Wadsworth Golf Course Construction Company executed the build, completing construction by October 31, 1992. The course opened officially on July 4, 1993, with Weiskopf and newly hired Head Professional Randy Shannon playing the inaugural round before several hundred early members and property owners. The Weiskopf and Morrish design at Broken Top navigates the varied terrain of the Deschutes plateau with the strategic sophistication characteristic of both designers' best work.

The course plays to approximately 6,900 yards at par 72, routing through juniper and ponderosa pine forest with volcanic rock features incorporated as natural hazards throughout. The high altitude of Bend — approximately 3,600 feet — affects shot distances, and the variable desert climate creates playing conditions that challenge players throughout the season. The setting beneath Broken Top and the Three Sisters creates among the visually dramatic golf environments in the Northwest. On clear days, the volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range dominate the western horizon, providing a backdrop for the golf experience that no degree of course design can manufacture.

This combination of Weiskopf and Morrish design quality with exceptional natural scenery has made Broken Top among the sought-after private golf experiences in Oregon. Broken Top Club has hosted Oregon Golf Association events and competitive golf throughout its history, and the course is consistently ranked among the top private courses in the Pacific Northwest by national publications. Today Broken Top Club stands as one of the landmark private golf achievements in central Oregon, a Weiskopf and Morrish design that honors the natural landscape of the Cascade foothills while delivering championship-quality golf in a setting of extraordinary volcanic beauty.
