Briarwood Country Club

20800 N 135th Ave, Sun City West, AZ 85375

Designed by Greg Nash · Est. 1983

Designed by Greg Nash and opened in 1983, Briarwood Country Club is a par-72 layout stretching 6,576 yards through the Sun City West active adult community in the West Valley. Nash's design incorporates gentle desert terrain and well-maintained bentgrass greens suited to the year-round playing conditions of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

History

Briarwood Country Club serves the active adult community of Sun City West, the Del Webb retirement community that opened in 1978 as an expansion of the original Sun City development west of Phoenix. Greg Nash, one of Arizona's most prolific course designers, was engaged to create the club's golf facility, producing a layout calibrated for the active senior demographic that Sun City West was designed to serve. Nash's design philosophy at Briarwood reflected an understanding of the particular demands of active adult golf: courses that are visually engaging and offer genuine challenge without being so demanding in length or terrain difficulty that they discourage older players from completing rounds comfortably.

The course works with the relatively flat terrain of the West Valley desert, using water features, strategic bunkering, and tree lines to create definition and interest without relying on dramatic elevation changes. Sun City West's development by Del Webb Corporation followed the same principles that made the original Sun City among the successful planned retirement communities in American history—a full spectrum of recreational, social, and cultural amenities designed around the assumption that retirement should be an active, engaged phase of life rather than a passive withdrawal from it. Golf was central to that vision, and Briarwood Country Club served as one of the community's primary gathering points.

The club's private character within an age-restricted community creates a membership base with distinctive characteristics: a high proportion of daily golfers, significant demand for social programming and dining, and a membership that turns over as residents age and are replaced by new retirees seeking the Sun City West lifestyle. Managing this demographic reality while maintaining course quality and financial stability has been the consistent challenge facing Sun City West's club operators. Briarwood has undergone periodic improvements to keep the facility competitive with the other active adult golf clubs in the greater Phoenix area, a market where Sun City, Sun City West, Surprise, and other retirement communities compete for the significant spending power of the retiree demographic.

The club's position within a mature, fully developed community with established residential values and a loyal resident base provides stability that newer developments sometimes lack.
