Designed by Geoffrey Cornish · Est. 1968

Bretwood Golf Course is a 36-hole facility in Keene, New Hampshire, comprising the North and South courses on 300 acres of former farmland in the Monadnock Region. The original 18 holes were designed by Geoffrey Cornish and opened in phases in 1968 and 1969, with the facility expanded to 36 holes through two additional nines completed in 1989 and 1995. Both courses offer large bentgrass greens, significant elevation changes, and multiple water features set against views of the surrounding hills.

History

Bretwood Golf Course occupies a 300-acre parcel in Keene, New Hampshire, on land that had been continuously farmed by the Barrett family for generations. The farm was destroyed by fire, and in the aftermath the family — led by Hugh Barrett — decided to repurpose the land for golf. Working with Geoffrey S. Cornish, a prolific golf course architect New England has produced, the Barretts developed an original 18-hole layout that opened in two phases: the first nine holes in 1968, and the second nine in July 1969. Cornish routed the original holes through the gently rolling former farmland, establishing wide fairways with large bentgrass greens protected by strategic bunkering and earth mounds.

The design respected the natural contours of the property while introducing deliberate elevation changes that lent drama and strategic variety to the round. Water features, introduced carefully throughout the layout, added additional risk-reward dimensions without overwhelming the playing experience. Hugh Barrett took an active role in the course's ongoing development, ultimately contributing his own design work to the expansion of the facility. In 1989, Barrett opened a new nine holes that were blended with the original back nine to form what is now called the North Course. The North Course extends to 6,976 yards from the championship tees with a course rating of 73.3 and a slope of 139 — one of the more demanding public course ratings in New Hampshire.

A fourth nine designed by Barrett was completed in 1995 and paired with the original front nine to create the South Course, which plays to 6,952 yards with a course rating of 73.7 and slope of 136. The Monadnock Region setting gives both courses a character shaped by the hill country of southwestern New Hampshire. The ever-present winds that funnel through the region from the nearby peaks influence play on the more exposed holes, adding an additional variable that rewards experienced course management. Views of the surrounding ridgelines are available from the higher elevation points of the property. Four sets of tees on each course accommodate golfers across a wide range of abilities.

The North Course tees range from Gold (73.3/139) through Blue (71.4/129), White (68.9/121), and Red (65.6/116), with corresponding women's ratings on the Blue, White, and Red tees. The South Course offers a similar configuration. Penncross bentgrass greens on both courses have historically been among the more consistently maintained surfaces at a public facility in the Keene area. Bretwood Golf Course continues to operate as a family-owned facility, its identity inseparable from the Barrett family's decision to transform their ancestral farmland into a complete public golf destination in southern New Hampshire. The 36-hole inventory allows the club to accommodate high rounds volume during peak season without compromising the pace of play or conditioning that have defined the operation for more than five decades.
