History
The Rees Jones Course at The Breakers Palm Beach is a private course originally built in 1968 that has been comprehensively rebuilt and refined across multiple decades of investment by one of America's most storied resort hotels. The course's most significant transformation came in 2005, when the hotel engaged Rees Jones and Steve Weisser to undertake a comprehensive rebuilding of the layout — a project that converted the course from a par 71 to a par 72 and extended it to approximately 7,100 yards, establishing it as a genuine championship test within the Palm Beach resort market. Rees Jones — the son of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and among the active course architects of his generation, known for his work on major championship venues including multiple U.S. Open sites — applied his renovation expertise to the Breakers layout. The realignment of several holes was among the most significant changes, rerouting portions of the course to improve its strategic logic and take advantage of the property's terrain. The result was a course with a slope of 146 and a USGA rating of 74.8 from the tips — numbers that place the Rees Jones Course among the more demanding private resort layouts in South Florida.
Jones and Weisser returned to the property in 2022 to complete a further update, providing the course with a more classic visual aesthetic while maintaining the design integrity of the 2005 reconstruction. The 2022 work refreshed bunker aesthetics, green surrounds, and playing surface infrastructure, keeping the course at the conditioning level appropriate to The Breakers' position as among the celebrated resort hotels in the United States. The Rees Jones Course is located approximately ten miles west of The Breakers' landmark main resort building on Palm Beach island, within The Breakers West residential community.
Access is available to hotel guests and private club members — a dual-access model that connects the course to both The Breakers resort operation and the West Palm Beach private club market.
