The current course was rebuilt by Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva in 1989, and has been further refined with a redesigned 18th hole in 2018 and significant tree removal and tee box construction in 2021–2022.
History
Bradford Country Club traces its origins to 1925, when renowned New England golf course architect Wayne E. Stiles designed the original 18-hole layout in Bradford, a historic village that forms part of the city of Haverhill in Essex County, Massachusetts. Stiles, who was responsible for numerous significant courses across New England during the interwar period, created a layout suited to the rolling terrain of the Merrimack Valley. Bradford sits along the Merrimack River opposite Haverhill, and the surrounding hills and valleys provided natural terrain for a golf course of character. The club operated on the Stiles layout for decades before the property underwent a comprehensive redesign in 1989 by Geoffrey S. Cornish, ASGCA, and Brian M. Silva, ASGCA. This redesign established the current routing, which plays to a par of 71 and stretches to 6,121 yards from the championship tees. Cornish was by 1989 the elder statesman of New England golf design, with a portfolio of hundreds of courses across the region, while Silva was emerging as one of his successors in the tradition of thoughtful New England golf architecture. Together they crafted a layout that respects the terrain while providing a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers across the skill spectrum.
The course rating of 70.4 and slope of 132 from the black tees indicate a layout that rewards solid ball-striking while remaining accessible from the shorter tee configurations. Bradford Country Club operates as a semi-private facility, combining a membership base with public tee time availability. The club has continued to invest in course improvements in recent years, with a newly designed 18th hole completed in 2018 providing a stronger finishing hole to the round. In 2021 and 2022, significant tree removal and new tee box construction further improved the course, widening landing areas, improving sight lines, and enhancing overall playability across all ability levels. The Merrimack Valley has a strong golf tradition stretching back to the late nineteenth century, with Bradford Country Club serving as one of the anchoring facilities for golf in Essex County.
The club's multiple tee configurations, including positions offering yardages from 6,121 yards down to approximately 4,800 yards, ensure that players of all abilities can find an appropriate challenge. The club's semi-private character allows it to serve both a loyal membership and the broader public golf community of northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.
