Boughton Ridge Golf Course

335 E Boughton Road, Bolingbrook, IL 60440

Designed by Roger Packard · Est. 1981

Boughton Ridge Golf Course is a nine-hole executive course owned and operated by the Bolingbrook Park District in Will County, Illinois, set on 45 acres of contoured terrain where water comes into play on seven of the nine holes. Designed by Roger Packard and opened in 1981, the par-32 layout at 2,205 yards offers an accessible, affordable introduction to the game as well as a useful short-game challenge for more experienced players. The course is managed by KemperSports and paired with Ashbury's Restaurant, a year-round dining facility on the property.

History

Boughton Ridge Golf Course was built in 1981 as part of the Bolingbrook Park District's commitment to providing recreational facilities for the rapidly growing community of Bolingbrook, a southwest suburb of Chicago in Will County. The course was designed by Roger Packard, an Illinois-based golf architect from the Packard family that produced several prominent designers working in the Chicago metropolitan area during the mid-twentieth century. E. Lawrence (Larry) Packard, Roger's father, was a prolific architect in the region, and the family's influence on suburban Chicago golf course development was substantial. The nine-hole executive format was a deliberate choice for the Bolingbrook site. The park district sought a facility that would serve beginning golfers, families, and senior players who might find a full eighteen-hole championship course daunting or time-prohibitive.

The executive layout — shorter holes, quicker rounds, more accessible pricing — aligned with the park district's mission to provide recreational programming for the widest possible cross-section of the community. Packard's routing took full advantage of the site's water features. Seven of the nine holes incorporate water hazards, making Boughton Ridge a more demanding test than its modest yardage might suggest. The contoured fairways and well-maintained greens have given the course a reputation as a solid short-game challenge for players at all skill levels, not merely a beginner's layout. The course sits on 45 acres at 335 E. Boughton Road in Bolingbrook, easily accessible from Interstate 55 and serving a broad catchment area in Will and DuPage counties.

Management was eventually contracted to KemperSports, a national golf management company that oversees the course's operations and maintains Ashbury's Restaurant, an on-site dining facility that serves food and beverages year-round regardless of weather conditions. Boughton Ridge has remained a stable fixture in the Bolingbrook Park District's recreation portfolio for over four decades, providing affordable golf to a community that has grown substantially since the course's 1981 opening. The combination of accessible pricing, short format, and on-site dining has made it a popular choice for casual rounds, after-work golf, and family outings throughout the southwest suburban Chicago area. The course plays 2,905 yards from the championship tees at par 35, with a course rating of 33.5 and slope of 115. Boughton Ridge operates as one of Bolingbrook's primary public golf assets, complementing the larger and more demanding Bolingbrook Golf Club to provide a range of public golf options for the community. The nine-hole format makes it particularly accessible for golfers with limited time, families with children new to the game, and senior players seeking a shorter walking experience.

Roger Packard's compact but strategically genuine design has served its community function well through more than four decades of municipal operation. Boughton Ridge Golf Course plays 3,047 yards from the championship tees on Roger Packard's nine-hole layout in Bolingbrook, a compact design whose par-35 configuration provides genuine strategic content within the constraints of a modest DuPage County site. The Bolingbrook Park District's investment in Boughton Ridge gave the community's residents an accessible public golf facility whose quality reflects the park district's commitment to recreational programming across the skill spectrum. Packard's design philosophy for public nine-hole courses emphasized strategic variety over sheer length — creating layouts where the differences between holes provide the interest that championship-length yardage achieves on full-size facilities. The course serves as an entry point for newer golfers in the Bolingbrook community, with shorter playing times and lower green fees than full-length facilities, while also providing a quick nine-hole option for experienced players who want to practice their games. The park district's maintenance standards ensure that Boughton Ridge's playing surfaces remain appropriate for the competitive amateur programs and recreational golf that it serves throughout the Illinois golf season.
