Boonsboro Country Club features a championship 18-hole course designed by Frederick A. Findlay and opened in 1929, with bent grass greens and Bermuda fairways stretching to 6,787 yards. The club has hosted the Virginia State Amateur Championship and regularly stages VSGA events on this classic central Virginia layout.
History
Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, Virginia has its foundational design story rooted in the visit of Willie Park Jr. in 1922. Park — the celebrated Scottish architect who had won the Open Championship in 1887 and 1889 and gone on to design courses on both sides of the Atlantic — came to Lynchburg to evaluate the city's existing golf facilities. He identified the Sholto farmland as an exceptional site for a new club, and in 1923 local businessmen purchased 300 acres of the property to begin the development that would culminate in the course's official opening on July 1, 1929.
Park gave his enthusiastic approval for the tract and selected the routing, but it was Fred Findlay who completed the design work and guided the course through construction. Findlay, a Scottish-born architect who had settled in Virginia after World War I, built a significant regional practice working at clubs across central and southwest Virginia. His work at Boonsboro translated Park's routing concept into a playable championship course, creating the layout that Lynchburg golfers would play for the century to follow.
The course occupies rolling terrain in the western neighborhoods of Lynchburg, where the natural topography of the Blue Ridge foothills provides elevation change and visual variety. The layout plays through mature tree corridors and across the varied terrain that Park identified as exceptional in 1922, giving Boonsboro a natural character that requires maintenance rather than artificial construction to sustain its beauty. Boonsboro has hosted numerous Virginia Golf Association championships over its history, serving as the respected private club competitive venue in the Lynchburg area.
The club's tournament history reflects the quality of the course and the competitive tradition of its membership, which has included many of Lynchburg's most accomplished amateur golfers. The club today provides members with among the top private golfing experiences in central Virginia — championship golf, state-of-the-art tennis, Olympic-size swimming pool, fine dining, and event facilities — maintaining the standard of excellence that Willie Park and Fred Findlay established on the Sholto farmland nearly a century ago.
