History
Bloomington Country Club was established in 1921, making it one of the oldest private golf clubs in the southern Indiana region. The club was founded during the golden era of American golf course construction, when the sport was rapidly expanding from its northeastern strongholds into the heartland of the country, driven in part by the influence of the great Scottish and English professionals who had emigrated to America and popularized the game in new communities. The original course design is attributed to William H. Diddel, an Indianapolis-based golf architect who was among the most active designers in Indiana and the surrounding Midwest during the first half of the twentieth century. Diddel designed dozens of courses across Indiana and neighboring states during his career and was instrumental in shaping the character of golf in the region. His work at Bloomington Country Club reflected the parkland design traditions of the era, with fairways cut through mature woodland, natural terrain shaping the character of each hole, and an emphasis on shotmaking precision over brute force.
Situated at 3000 South Rogers Street in Bloomington, the club lies in proximity to Indiana University, creating a natural relationship between the club and the university community that has persisted through the decades. The club has served as a private refuge for the Bloomington community through a century of social change, and its course has been continuously maintained and updated to modern playing standards while preserving the essential character of its original design. The layout stretches to 6,545 yards from the Blue tees, carrying a course rating of 73.4 and slope of 137 — a demanding test that reflects the club's commitment to maintaining a genuine championship-caliber private course in the southern Indiana market.
The five sets of tees, ranging from the championship Blue down to the Red at 4,566 yards, make the course accessible to the full range of member abilities. Over more than one hundred years of operation, Bloomington Country Club has hosted numerous Indiana Golf Association events and served as a proving ground for generations of Indiana University golfers and local competitive players. The club's longevity speaks to its deep roots in the Bloomington community and its sustained commitment to providing a high-quality private golf and social experience for its members.
