Blacklake Golf Resort is a 27-hole Ted Robinson Sr. layout on California’s Central Coast in Nipomo, offering three distinct nines—Lakes, Canyons, and Oaks—that can be combined in any pairing for an 18-hole round. The Lakes nine features generous fairways and water hazards, the Canyons nine plays from elevated tees overlooking rolling terrain with ocean breezes, and the Oaks nine threads through a forest of coastal oaks for a target-golf experience.
History
Blacklake Golf Resort traces its origins to the mid-1960s when the first 18 holes opened for play in Nipomo, California, on the mesa between Santa Maria and Pismo Beach. Ted Robinson Sr., the architect widely known as “The King of Water Features,” designed the original layout to take advantage of the property’s varied terrain, incorporating water hazards and tree-lined corridors into a resort-friendly design. The original configuration consisted of two nine-hole courses: the Lakes and the Canyons. The Lakes nine, the longest of the three at 3,276 yards from the back tees with a par of 36, is considered the most forgiving layout, featuring generous fairways and opening with a par 3. The Canyons nine, also a par 36 at 3,125 yards, offers several elevated tees that overlook rolling fairways, with cool sea breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean adding to the playing experience. In 1996, the resort expanded to its current 27-hole configuration with the addition of the Oaks nine, also designed by Ted Robinson Sr. The Oaks course is the shortest of the three at just over 2,900 yards with a par of 35, but it demands accuracy as it winds through a dense forest of coastal live oak trees in a target-golf format. The three nines can be paired in any combination—Lakes/Oaks, Lakes/Canyon, or Oaks/Canyon—giving golfers variety across multiple visits. Blacklake is the only 27-hole golf resort on California’s Central Coast. The facility includes a 30-station driving range and practice putting and chipping greens. The resort’s location on the Nipomo Mesa places it in a mild coastal climate zone that allows year-round play, and the property offers lodging, dining, and event facilities alongside the golf courses.
