History

Bermuda Run Country Club, situated in the Davie County town of Bermuda Run near Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a 36-hole facility whose origins trace to the 1920s when the Ariston Farm was built by David and China Lybrook on what is now the club's property. The modern club was established when developer Billy Satterfield, armed with artist renderings of a planned golf community, sold 175 lots at 0,000 each and used the proceeds to build the first course on the site. The East Course was designed by Ellis Maples and opened in 1971; the West Course followed in 2000, also designed by Dan Maples. Ellis Maples was among the most prolific and respected golf architects in the Carolinas during the mid-twentieth century.

His most notable works include Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, Pinehurst No. 5, and Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro. At Bermuda Run, Ellis shaped the East Course through rolling Piedmont terrain, incorporating the natural topography of the site to create a layout that rewards strategic shot-making. The East Course earned recognition as the second-ranked course in a 2002 Triad Business News listing of top Carolinas courses, and it consistently ranks among the most demanding layouts in the Triad, appearing annually in the Triad Business Journal's list of most challenging courses. In 1999, the Town of Bermuda Run was incorporated, formalizing the community's identity as a distinct municipal entity in Davie County.

The East Course serves as the permanent host of the Wyndham Championship Qualifier, a PGA Tour Monday qualifier that brings professional players to Bermuda Run each summer. The course also hosts the Carolina Women's Amateur and the Crosby Scholars Golf Tournament, giving the facility a competitive profile that extends well beyond private member events. Together, the two courses form a comprehensive golfing experience that has served as the primary amenity for the planned community surrounding the club. Bermuda Run was one of the earlier planned golf communities in the Piedmont region, developed during the period when mixed residential and golf developments were beginning to transform the landscape of suburban North Carolina.

The Maples name remains deeply embedded in the history of North Carolina golf, and Bermuda Run stands as a defining achievement of that legacy.
