History
Benton Golf & Country Club was established in 1950 when 100 Benton businessmen pooled resources to purchase the land on which the front nine now sits. This founding model — a community subscription effort by local business leaders — was characteristic of how smaller Kentucky cities built their golf institutions in the postwar decades, when rising prosperity and the expansion of the game created the conditions for new clubs to be viable in markets that had previously been too small to support them. The original nine holes opened in the early 1950s on property in Marshall County near Kentucky Lake, with Alex McKay responsible for the design.
The course served the membership's needs for four decades before the club expanded to a full 18 holes in 1990, when it leased additional land from Dr. Jerry Sells and Bill Morgan to build a back nine. This expansion transformed Benton Golf & Country Club from a nine-hole facility into an 18-hole private club capable of hosting a broader range of competitive events and providing members with the full experience of a regulation-length course.
The club's location in Marshall County places it near the western Kentucky Lake resort region, an area that draws significant recreational traffic throughout the spring, summer, and fall. This positioning has given the club a natural connection to the outdoor recreation culture of the Kentucky Lake corridor, and the membership has historically included both full-time residents and seasonal visitors who appreciate the club's facilities during their time in the area. The expanded 18-hole course provides members with a playing experience that reflects McKay's original design philosophy for the front nine combined with the back nine construction from 1990.
Western Kentucky's rolling terrain and deciduous hardwood forests shape the character of the layout, with tree-lined fairways and natural land contours creating the variety that sustains member interest across repeated rounds. Over more than seven decades of continuous operation, Benton Golf & Country Club has served as the primary private golf and social institution for Marshall County, hosting tournaments, social events, and the everyday recreational golf that is the foundation of any club's life.
