Belfair's history as a named place in the South Carolina Lowcountry extends to 1811, when William Telfair and Betsey Bellinger of Savannah, Georgia were married and established a plantation they called Belfair — a portmanteau of their two surnames. The property they developed along the tidal inlets and wetlands near Bluffton became a significant Lowcountry agricultural estate, and the name endured across two centuries of the land's many transformations, preserved today in the half-mile avenue of live oaks draped in Spanish moss that forms the community's most iconic approach. The modern Belfair as a residential golf community began taking shape in the mid-1990s, when developers John Reed and David Everett approached Tom Fazio with a vision for creating a 36-hole golf complex within a 1,100-acre forested estate along the Colleton River. Fazio accepted, designing two courses — the West and the East — with the West opening first in 1996. Tom Marzolf collaborated on the West Course design, helping translate the site's heavily wooded, marsh-edged terrain into a championship-caliber layout of genuine distinction.3 and slope of 144 from the championship markers. Fazio himself has said of Belfair, "It's Shadow Creek quality. I'd stake my reputation on the fact that Belfair is as good as any golf course you will ever see or play." Fazio's design at the West Course emphasizes variety and visual engagement across every hole. Grandiose loblolly pines frame many fairways, creating corridors of dramatic scale that make the course feel larger than its acreage suggests. Marshland exposures come into play throughout the routing, with the Colleton River providing a backdrop for several key holes. On the West's back nine, the 429-yard par-4 ninth hole brings a lagoon into play along the entire left side of the fairway, creating a risk-reward dynamic that tests both strategic planning and shotmaking execution. The East Course followed three years later in 1999, completed with the assistance of designer Beau Welling, giving Belfair 36 holes of championship golf within its gated community. The East offers a distinctive experience from the West — its par-71 layout of 6,900 yards is reminiscent of links-style play with naturalized sand areas, native grasses, and an open landscape that contrasts with the more enclosed, forested character of the West Course. The Okatie River provides deep-water views from multiple holes on the East, adding a coastal visual dimension to the architectural experience. Belfair's West Course underwent a comprehensive $5.8 million renovation overseen by Fazio Design, demonstrating the membership's commitment to maintaining the course at the level of quality Fazio originally delivered. The renovation addressed greens complexes, bunker construction, drainage, and irrigation infrastructure throughout the property — essentially rebuilding the course's technical foundation while preserving the design intent that has defined Belfair's reputation for more than two decades. Belfair transitioned to member ownership in January 2005, deepening the community's investment in the club's long-term trajectory. Both courses have been ranked among the Top 150 Private Residential courses in the country by Golf Digest and comparable publications, a sustained recognition that reflects the quality of Fazio's architecture and the membership's stewardship of the community. The 1,100-acre community footprint encompasses residential neighborhoods, fitness facilities, swimming pools, and tennis courts alongside the two championship courses.
