History
Balsam Mountain Preserve opened in 2008 in Sylva, North Carolina, as part of a conservation-focused residential development set within the Blue Ridge Mountains at elevations exceeding 3,400 feet. Arnold Palmer created the golf course as a centerpiece of the preserve, utilizing the dramatic mountain topography to craft a layout unlike anything found on flatter terrain. The course plays to par 70 over 6,792 yards from the back tees, with a course rating of 73.5 and a slope of 149 — the high slope reflecting the significant influence of the mountain terrain on every shot played. Elevation changes of hundreds of feet between tees and greens create shots that play dramatically differently from their measured yardages, demanding sophisticated course management and an appreciation for mountain golf's unique physics. The preserve's conservation mission influenced the course design, with Palmer's team working to minimize environmental impact while maximizing the use of natural features. The course passes through old-growth hardwood forest, crosses mountain streams, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks on clear days. The five tee configurations allow golfers of varying abilities to enjoy the mountain experience, with the Palmer tees at 5,960 yards offering a more accessible entry point to the challenging terrain. Balsam Mountain Preserve has earned recognition as one of western North Carolina's leading golf destinations, drawing visitors from across the Southeast and beyond who seek the combination of spectacular scenery and genuine design quality.
