History
Bailey Golf Ranch is a public 18-hole golf course in Owasso, a rapidly growing suburb north of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The facility was established in 1993 on land donated by Larkin Bailey to the City of Owasso specifically for the purpose of building a public golf course, an act of civic generosity that gave the Owasso community a quality recreational resource at minimal public expense. The course was designed by Bland P. Pittman, an Oklahoma-based architect who worked extensively across the state during the 1980s and 1990s. Owasso's position in the northeastern corner of Tulsa County placed it in one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing suburban corridors during the 1990s and 2000s, as residential development expanded outward from Tulsa along Highway 169. The donation of land by Larkin Bailey, whose name the course commemorates — reflected both in the facility's name and in the address of 10105 Larkin Bailey Boulevard — represented a visionary investment in community infrastructure at a moment when the area's population was beginning the growth trajectory that would make Owasso one of Oklahoma's most populous cities. Pittman designed a course that works with the gently rolling terrain of northeastern Oklahoma, incorporating native grasses, creeks, lakes, and thickets into a layout that provides variety across the eighteen holes.1 and slope of 132 that place it in the upper tier of challenge for public facilities in the region. Bermuda grass fairways and bentgrass greens are standard for the area's climate, offering good playing conditions through the long Oklahoma golf season. The links-influenced character of the design draws on the open, rolling terrain of Tulsa County's northern tier, where stands of native tallgrass prairie alternate with wooded creek drainages to create the varied landscape that Pittman incorporated into the routing. Water features, including the creek systems that naturally bisect the property, require forced carries and add lateral hazard complexity to multiple holes. Native grass rough outside the irrigated fairway corridors provides a naturalistic visual framing while adding penalizing depth to errant shots. Four sets of tees make Bailey Ranch accessible to golfers across the full range of abilities, from beginners learning the game to single-digit handicappers seeking a competitive test. The public format ensures that the course serves the full breadth of Owasso's growing population rather than an prominent membership, fulfilling the civic vision that animated Larkin Bailey's original land donation. The facility includes a driving range, practice putting green, and clubhouse amenities appropriate to a quality municipal course. In the decades since opening, Bailey Ranch has hosted league play, charity tournaments, and regional amateur events that have made it a center of competitive golf in northeastern Oklahoma. Its combination of accessible pricing, solid course conditions, and challenging design has kept it among the most frequented public courses in the Tulsa metropolitan area.
