Azalea City Golf Course

1000 Gaillard Dr, Mobile, AL 36608

Designed by Robert Bruce Harris · Est. 1957

Opened in 1957 and designed by Robert Bruce Harris — a colleague of Donald Ross — Azalea City Golf Course is a public parkland layout set inside Langan Park in Mobile. The 18-hole, par-72 course stretching 6,826 yards has hosted the PGA Tour's Mobile Open, the Alabama Open, and the Mobile Metro Championship.

History

Azalea City Golf Course opened in 1957 as a City of Mobile municipal facility in Langan Park, designed by Robert Bruce Harris — an architect with a personal connection to Donald Ross, who had shaped much of American golf course design in the first half of the twentieth century. Harris's design created an 18-hole championship layout measuring 6,850 yards at a par of 72, establishing Azalea City as one of the premier public golf facilities in the Deep South and positioning it as a serious tournament venue from its earliest years. The course earned immediate credibility in the professional golf world when the PGA Tour staged four consecutive tournaments at Azalea City from 1959 through 1962 under the banner of the Sertoma Open. The Sertoma Open was a legitimate PGA Tour event that attracted the top players of the era, and one edition was won by Arnold Palmer — perhaps the most recognizable name in golf history. Palmer's victory at Azalea City elevated the course's national profile and established it as a facility worthy of the highest level of competition. The course has continued to host the Mobile Metro Championship across decades of operation, serving as the home of one of the region's most enduring amateur competitions.

The Mobile Metro has brought together the best amateur golfers in the Gulf Coast region annually, making Azalea City the backdrop for competitive golf at multiple levels — from PGA Tour professionals in the Sertoma era to the current generation of regional amateurs. Langan Park provides a distinctive setting for golf within Mobile's municipal park system. The park encompasses a botanical garden, lake, and other recreational amenities alongside the golf course, giving Azalea City a natural environment that stands apart from the typical municipal golf aesthetic.

The mature trees and landscaping of the park have evolved over the course's seven decades of operation to create a setting that feels more established and private than most public facilities. Azalea City Golf Course has served Mobile's diverse golfing public for nearly 70 years, maintaining its status as the city's flagship public golf facility. The combination of championship design, PGA Tour history, and a beautiful park setting has made it one of Alabama's most respected public courses.
