The course was designed by Harold Paddock, a prolific Ohio-based golf architect who produced numerous private club layouts throughout northeastern Ohio during the mid-twentieth century. Paddock's design for Avon Oaks utilized the gently rolling terrain of the Avon area to create an eighteen-hole layout that has remained a fixture of private golf in the western suburbs of Cleveland. Harold Paddock was among the most active golf course architects in Ohio during the 1920s through the 1950s, and Avon Oaks represents one of his later works.
