Designed by Chic Adams · Est. 1950

Arrowhead Country Club is a Chic Adams design from 1950 set against the Black Hills as a backdrop, playing 6,519 yards on par 71 with multiple sets of tees. The private club is a Rapid City institution and longtime host of South Dakota Golf Association events.

History

Arrowhead Country Club has served as the leading private golf and social club of Rapid City, South Dakota since its founding in 1953—a story that begins not with a golfer but with a civic-minded banker who believed a great city deserved a great club. The moving force behind the club was Art Dahl, president of Rapid City National Bank. Recognizing that a thriving community like Rapid City needed quality private recreational facilities, Dahl organized Valley Investment Incorporated in July 1953, attracting investors who acquired land west of downtown for the project. Dahl contracted with Chic Adams to design and construct a nine-hole golf course on the property.

The course opened for play in the summer of 1955. The first foursome to play the new course included Gordon White, Mort Wilkins, Milo Brekhus, and Chris Hogan—names still remembered in Rapid City golf lore. From its earliest years, Arrowhead established a tradition of memorable golf events. The Hillsdilly Member-Guest Tournament, originating in 1956, became the highlight of the golf and social calendar for many years, drawing participants from across the region and cementing the club's reputation for gracious hospitality.

The nine-hole layout was eventually expanded to a full 18 holes as membership grew and the club's resources expanded. The routing takes full advantage of the Black Hills terrain near Rapid City, with elevation changes, tree-lined corridors, and creek crossings that distinguish the course from the flatter layouts common to the northern Great Plains. The club's address is 3675 Sheridan Lake Road. In November 1979, Arrowhead Country Club purchased the land, buildings, and improvements outright from Valley Investment Incorporated for $333,500, transitioning from a leasing arrangement to full member ownership.

This purchase gave the membership direct control over the club's future and enabled long-term investment in course and facility improvements. The club has served as a regular host for South Dakota Golf Association events. Arrowhead hosted the 2020 SDGA Amateur Championship, with competitors from across the state competing over the course.
