History
Arrowhead Country Club opened for play in 1974 in Montgomery, Alabama, designed by architect Cam Hardigree to serve the expanding residential communities of the Alabama state capital. The 18-hole championship course was built to provide a private golf facility for the professional and business community settling in the areas southwest of downtown Montgomery. Hardigree's design used the rolling terrain of Montgomery County to create a layout that measures 6,710 yards from the back tees at a par of 72.
Cam Hardigree was a regional golf course architect who contributed several courses to the Alabama market during the 1960s and 1970s, a period of significant private club development across the state as the game of golf expanded into mainstream American recreation. At Arrowhead, Hardigree created a course that balances strategic challenge with the kind of playability that sustains a private club membership across multiple generations of golfers of varying abilities. Located at 50 Ocala Drive in Montgomery, the club was built to complement the residential development occurring in this sector of the city.
Montgomery, as the state capital and home to Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Air Force Base, has historically supported a private club market that draws from both the civilian professional community and the military officer corps stationed at the area's installations. Arrowhead's membership has consistently drawn from both constituencies, giving it a diverse character that reflects the composition of the broader Montgomery community. The club offers members access to an 18-hole championship golf course alongside tennis courts, a fitness facility, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and dining venues — the full complement of amenities that a private country club requires to maintain relevance across the competitive Montgomery club market.
The club has hosted Alabama State University athletics, with the golf team using the course for competition. Over its five decades of operation, Arrowhead Country Club has established a reputation as a well-maintained private facility that serves members at a consistent standard. The club's longevity in what has always been a competitive market reflects the strength of its membership community and the quality of Hardigree's original course design.
