History
April Sound Country Club opened in 1976 on the southern shores of Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas, part of a broader wave of club developments that transformed the lake country northwest of Houston during the 1970s. Carlton Gipson, a Texas-based golf course architect who worked extensively across the state during this period, designed the original 18-hole layout — the White Nine and Blue Nine — taking advantage of the wooded lakeside terrain to produce a course that balanced natural scenery with competitive challenge. Gipson's design incorporated the mature pine and hardwood forests characteristic of the Sam Houston National Forest region, routing holes through stands of trees and along the contours of the land to create an experience meaningfully different from the open parkland courses typical of Houston's flat coastal plain. Water features, including views of Lake Conroe itself, gave several holes a distinctive character and demanded accurate shotmaking on approaches to greens protected by natural hazards. In 1985, Carlton Gipson returned to add a third nine holes to the property, creating the executive Family Nine that expanded the club's total to 27 holes.
The addition gave the membership greater flexibility in scheduling and provided a shorter option suitable for juniors and high-handicap players who might find the two championship nines demanding. Gipson's continuity across both design phases ensured a cohesive aesthetic throughout the 27-hole property. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, April Sound established itself as an important community club serving Montgomery County's growing residential population. The club's position on Lake Conroe — a 21,000-acre reservoir created in the early 1970s — made it part of a regional recreational ecosystem that attracted both permanent residents and weekend visitors from the Houston metropolitan area. The marina, tennis facilities, and dining amenities developed alongside the golf program, creating a full-service destination.
The club later came under management by Invited (formerly ClubCorp), one of the largest operators of private clubs in the United States. The national management structure brought investment in agronomy, facilities, and programming that helped the club maintain its position in a competitive Houston-area golf market. Today, April Sound Country Club's 27 holes remain a popular destination for golfers seeking a wooded lakeside setting distinct from the more urban private clubs of metropolitan Houston. The combination of Gipson's thoughtful routing, the natural beauty of the Lake Conroe shoreline, and the full complement of club amenities continues to draw members who value the retreat-like quality the course has provided since its opening more than four decades ago. Gipson's 27-hole routing at April Sound Country Club gave the Lake Conroe development a golf facility capable of serving the resort's guests and the surrounding residential community with the variety and scheduling flexibility that a single 18-hole course cannot provide.
The three nine-hole loops create multiple 18-hole combinations that give the membership genuinely different playing experiences depending on which combination of nines they play on any given day, and the rotation across the three configurations prevents the repetition that a fixed 18-hole format inevitably creates for frequent players. The Lake Conroe shoreline's wooded character — the post oak and loblolly pine vegetation of the Sam Houston National Forest visible from several holes — creates a visual environment distinct from the more manicured resort courses of the Houston metropolitan area's flat coastal plain. The resort-style amenities that April Sound Country Club has maintained alongside the golf operation — the marina, the pool and fitness facilities, and the club social programming — give the facility the multi-activity character that attracts members who want more than golf from their club membership. The Houston metropolitan area's long tradition of lake-oriented recreational development along Lake Conroe has sustained April Sound's membership base through the decades since Gipson's routing first opened, and the wooded lakeside setting that makes April Sound distinct from the open-terrain courses of downtown Houston and its inner suburbs remains as appealing today as it was when the club first established itself on the Lake Conroe waterfront.
