Angeles National Golf Club

9501 Kagel Canyon Road, Sunland, CA 91040

Designed by Jack Nicklaus · Est. 2002

Angeles National Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus public course set against the rugged canyon terrain of the San Gabriel Mountains in Sunland, featuring dramatic elevation changes, canyon views, and the championship Nicklaus tee stretching to over 7,000 yards. The course is one of the few Nicklaus-designed layouts in Southern California accessible to the public.

History

Angeles National Golf Club opened on June 23, 2004 in Sunland, California, designed by Jack Nicklaus II — making it the only Nicklaus Design golf course in Los Angeles County. The course's development was complicated by the extraordinary regulatory requirements of building at the base of the Angeles National Forest: the land was purchased in 1987, but extensive environmental studies delayed permitting until a Conditional Use Permit was obtained in 1997, with the Grading Permit following in 2001. The seven-year permitting process reflects the environmental sensitivity of the site, which borders protected national forest lands.

Jack Nicklaus II — one of Jack Nicklaus's sons who has developed an independent design practice within the broader Nicklaus Design family — created a 7,141-yard par-72 championship layout that reflects the dramatic terrain of the foothills at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The course uses the natural topography of the Sunland-Tujunga area, with Tifway Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens providing playing surfaces appropriate to the Southern California climate. Four sets of tees — from 7,141 yards to 4,899 yards — provide playing options for golfers across the full range of ability levels.

The course's setting at the base of the Angeles National Forest gives it a natural character unusual for a public course in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The surrounding wildland terrain and the dramatic mountains rising immediately above the course create a visual environment that distinguishes Angeles National from the more urban courses found throughout much of the LA market. The combination of forest setting, challenging terrain, and the design pedigree of the Nicklaus family has made Angeles National a destination for Los Angeles-area golfers seeking a more natural golf environment than the manicured resort and private club settings that dominate the regional market.

Angeles National Golf Club operates as a daily-fee public course, providing Los Angeles County residents with access to a Nicklaus-designed championship layout at rates more accessible than the private clubs in the Sunland-Tujunga area.
