History

Alto Lakes Golf and Country Club was established in the mid-to-late 1960s, with founding and opening dates reported between 1966 and 1968 depending on the source. The club sits at elevation in the village of Alto, New Mexico, in the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains and within view of 11,973-foot Sierra Blanca. The surrounding property ultimately grew to roughly 1,689 acres woven into the edge of the Lincoln National Forest, and the golf club became the anchor amenity of a larger residential community served over time by three sister clubs: Alto Lakes, The Outlaw at Alto Lakes, and Kokopelli at Alto Lakes. The original Alto Course is credited primarily to Milton Coggins, who laid out the first 18 holes. Published architect lists for the course also include Pete Dye, Robert Trent Jones Sr., and Ron Kirby as contributors, reflecting later design work and revisions to the original routing. The combined layout plays to a par of 71 and stretches 6,550 yards from the championship tees, threading between ponderosa pines and the small lakes that give the community its name. Blue Grass greens and Kentucky Bluegrass fairways reflect the cooler, higher-elevation climate of the Sacramento Mountains. Over the decades the course has served as the competitive and social center of the Alto Lakes community, hosting member events, guest days, and regional tournaments. The club describes the broader 36-hole complex as a destination for golfers seeking mountain golf without leaving New Mexico, and the Alto Course remains the longest-established layout of the three at the property. Alto Lakes Golf and Country Club continues to operate as a private, member-owned club, retaining its original Coggins-led design character while benefiting from decades of incremental refinement.
