Alta Vista Country Club
777 Alta Vista St Placentia CA 92870Designed by Harry Rainville · Est. 1961
Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia was designed by Harry Rainville and opened in 1961 as an 18-hole par-72 layout measuring 6,559 yards in Orange County. Rainville used the natural undulations of the Southern California hills to create a course that plays longer and more challenging than its yardage might suggest.
History
Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia opened in 1961 under the design guidance of Harry Rainville, one of Southern California's prominent postwar golf course architects. Set on gently rolling terrain in Orange County, the course was among several Rainville-designed private layouts built to meet the surging demand for club golf in the burgeoning suburbs south of Los Angeles. Rainville's routing made disciplined use of the land available, threading fairways between natural ridges and fashioning a course that plays demanding from the championship tees. The founding membership drew from the civic and business communities of Placentia and neighboring communities in Orange County. The club was incorporated as a traditional private facility, and the golf course became its centerpiece. In 1973, Harry Rainville's son David Rainville — a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects — undertook a refinement of the original routing, updating bunker placement and tee complexes to reflect evolved agronomic standards and to keep the course competitive against the newer private clubs being built across Orange County. This father-and-son continuity is unusual in California golf, and it ensured that the design language of the original layout was preserved rather than replaced. The Alta Vista club website credits both Harry Rainville (1961) and David Rainville (1973) as the course's architects, reflecting the continuity of the Rainville family's involvement across more than a decade of the course's early development. The course plays to par 72 over 6,559 yards from the championship tees, with a slope rating of 130 and a course rating of 71.5. Over 60 years of continuous operation in the same location, Alta Vista Country Club has maintained its standing as one of Orange County's consistently maintained private golf facilities.
