Algonkian Golf Course
47001 Fairway Dr, Sterling, VA 20165Designed by Edmund B. Ault · Est. 1962
Algonkian Golf Course sits within a regional park along the Potomac River in Loudoun County, where a tree-lined front nine with three water holes gives way to a rolling back nine with an active stream crossing four holes. Designed by Ed Ault in 1962 and managed by NOVA Parks since 1975, the course stretches to 6,909 yards at par 72, making it one of the longer public layouts in Northern Virginia. Bermuda fairways and large bent-grass greens reward players who manage distance and position on a layout that uses the Potomac River corridor's terrain to full advantage.
History
Algonkian Golf Course in Sterling, Virginia occupies a stretch of Potomac River frontage in Loudoun County that was originally developed by Potomac Electric Power Company as a recreational retreat for its employees. The utility company constructed the original golf course in 1962, retaining Ed Ault — one of the Washington D.C. region's most prolific golf architects — to design a layout on the wooded riverbank property. Ault's design for the Pepco retreat made productive use of the property's mature hardwood forest and the rolling terrain that characterizes the northern Loudoun County landscape west of the Beltway corridor.
The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (now NOVA Parks) purchased the Algonkian property from Pepco in 1975 and dedicated the public golf facility in 1976, transforming what had been a corporate employee retreat into a public amenity for the rapidly growing Northern Virginia metropolitan area. The transition from private corporate use to public park operation reflected the broader regional growth dynamics of the mid-1970s, when Northern Virginia's population was expanding rapidly and demand for accessible public recreation was outpacing the area's existing infrastructure. The course plays to approximately 6,900 yards from the championship tees over a par of 72, routing through the mature hardwood forest that gives Algonkian its distinctive parkland character.
Ed Ault's design uses the natural terrain of the river corridor — with its elevation changes, mature white and red oaks, and the visual presence of the Potomac just beyond the course boundaries — to create a layout that feels genuinely woodland in character rather than simply a cleared field. Several holes offer views of the river, and the sound and presence of the Potomac is a constant element of the playing experience. NOVA Parks has maintained Algonkian as one of its flagship golf properties, investing in infrastructure improvements that have kept the course competitive in Northern Virginia's increasingly sophisticated public golf market.
The surrounding Algonkian Regional Park encompasses over 800 acres of Potomac River frontage, providing an outdoor recreation context that extends well beyond the golf course itself. The combination of parkland character, Potomac River setting, and accessible public fees has made Algonkian one of the region's most popular public golf destinations for more than four decades.
