Charlevoix Country Club is an 18-hole Jerry Matthews design that opened in 1993 on 600 acres of the former Waller tract north of Charlevoix, Michigan. The par-72 layout stretches to 6,520 yards from the Blue tees across a mix of open and wooded holes lined by heather and water, with bentgrass throughout. It joined A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort's collection in 2017 as the resort's fourth course alongside Sundance, Torch, and Antrim Dells.
History
Charlevoix Country Club opened in 1993 on roughly 600 acres of the undeveloped Waller tract on the north side of Charlevoix, Michigan, with an 18-hole golf course anchoring a residential development. The layout was designed by Michigan architect Jerry Matthews, a Michigan Golf Hall of Fame inductee (2005) whose portfolio includes more than 90 courses across 42 of the state's 83 counties. Matthews routed the par-72 course across a mix of open and wooded terrain, with holes lined alternately by heather and water. The layout measures 6,520 yards from the Blue tees with a course rating of 72.2 and a slope of 137.
Four tee sets — Blue, White, Gold, and Red — scale the course down to 5,080 yards for forward play. Approximately eleven water hazards and thirty bunkers are distributed across the property, and bentgrass covers the fairways, tee boxes, and greens. The course is recognized by Golf Digest with a four-star Places to Play designation. A demanding finishing stretch, precision-required small greens, and several forced carries characterize the routing.
The par-5 fifteenth measures 585 yards, and the par-4 closer plays more than 420 yards from the championship tees — a sequence the resort describes as among the toughest finishing holes in Northern Michigan. In 2017, Charlevoix Country Club joined A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort, extending the resort to 72 holes across four courses. Based on glacier-carved bluffs between Torch Lake and Grand Traverse Bay, A-Ga-Ming already operated Matthews' Sundance course (opened 2005) along with the Torch and Antrim Dells layouts; the addition of Charlevoix gave the resort a second Jerry Matthews design in the region and a westside property closer to Lake Michigan. Clubhouse operations at Charlevoix include Shanahan's Pub, a fitness center, and a pool, which are integrated into A-Ga-Ming's resort membership and stay-and-play offerings.
The course accommodates both daily-fee public play and members, and the season runs from spring through late fall. Charlevoix Country Club sits approximately two miles north of downtown Charlevoix on U.S. 31, placing it within a short drive of the resort's core lodging at Torch Lake. Tee times are bookable through the ForeUP platform used across the A-Ga-Ming courses.
